Trees in the Bible

By: Karen Littlefield

Our Father likes to use His nature to teach us His nature and His wisdom. He often compared men to trees. When God is for us no man can cut us down.

Isa 14:8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.

When Jesus was healing this blind man He was making a point when He healed him twice.

Mar 8:22 And he cometh to Bethsaida: and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.
Mar 8:23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw aught.
Mar 8:24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.
Mar 8:25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.
Mar 8:26 And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

First Jesus healed the man's spiritual eyes so that he could see men as trees walking. Then Jesus healed the man's physical eyes.

It is more important to have our spiritual eyes open to our Father's word then it is to have our physical eyes healed. Jesus led the man out of town, it wasn't for them to know the mysteries of the Kingdom yet.
God compares Himself to a green fir tree.

Hos 14:3 Asshur shall not save us; we will not ride upon horses: neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, Ye are our gods: for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy.
Hos 14:4 I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.
Hos 14:5 I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.
Hos 14:6 His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.

Hos 14:7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.
Hos 14:8 Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.
Hos 14:9 Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

Our Father compares Himself to a green fir tree, because it never looses it's leaves in the winter like other trees do. They look dead and are dormant. One could almost say they are "blind" and "dead" in the winter months, but in the spring our Father renews their life and they live again. When a man cuts down a tree and carves an idol out of it, there is no more life or green left in it, it is dead. In the verses above we can see the mercy and forgiveness of our Father when we give up our idols He is always there to help us grow and prosper. Those who go against our Father's will shall fall. Our Father compares His children to the Cedars of Lebanon.

Psa 92:12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

You can read about the Cedars here on encarta.

Psa 104:16 The trees of the LORD are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;

Our Father planted us here for a reason. That we might be refined. He wants us to be fruitful and He wants us to bring Him glory. He fills us with His truth and gives us wisdom.

Gen 49:22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:

Isa 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

How can we bring glory to our Father?
We can bring glory to our Father by knowing who the different trees are.
Eze 17:24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

Who is the high tree that our Father will bring down? Who is the low tree that our Father exalted ? Who is the green tree that our Father dries up? Who are the dry trees that our Father makes to flourish?

Let us start with the high tree that will be brought down.

Isa 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Here our Father tells us who the high tree was. It is Lucifer, Satan, the serpent, the dragon. He is known by many names. Our Father shows us many examples and types so that we will be able to discern who he is. Pharaoh was an example, a type of Satan who was brought down low, When our Father led the children of Israel out of Egypt. In Daniel ch.4 we are told of another type for Satan. King Nebuchadnezzar is the tree in his dream that reaches to heaven but was to be cut down. Our Father shows us by example over and over through out history.

Eze 31:8 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty.

With each example our Father reveals to us a little more of the mystery that is hidden to those without eyes to see and ears to hear. God is teaching us the truth from His love letter to His Children, The Bible. Satan's children hear but do not understand, they see but do not perceive. All of God's children and all of God's trees have a special purpose and special talent. We are all different for a reason. Only our Father knows that reason, and only He can rightfully judge. God sees beyond the beauty and stature of every one of His Children. God's wisdom is far greater then man's wisdom.

Eze 28:12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
Eze 28:13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

The earthly king of Tyrus was not in the garden of eden. So what then is our Father trying to tell us? Notice his covering. Those are the stones in a priests breastplate. His music was songs of praise for our Father in the beginning until Satan decided he was so perfect that He should be God. His pride made him go from leading in praise to our Father to wanting the praise for himself.

H6865 Strong's concordance
The same as H6864; a rock; Tsor, a place in Palestine: - Tyre, Tyrus.

The word Tyrus means rock, He is the false rock. He is not our true Rock who is Christ.

Deu 32:18 Of the Rock that begot thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

Deu 32:31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.
Deu 32:32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:
Deu 32:33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

Satan's children drink the wine of their father the dragon, the old serpent, instead of the pure wine we get from our Father.

Have exalted the low tree

Psa 75:7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Isa 55:10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Isa 55:12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Isa 55:13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

1Sa 2:6 The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.
1Sa 2:7 The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
1Sa 2:8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he hath set the world upon them.

Luk 1:52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

Our Father isn't impressed with what we have, everything good we have is a blessing from Him to start with, but He is impressed by how much we love Him. Our Father placed much more value on the widows two mites then the great riches that were tithed by those who were making a show of following the law, proud of how much they gave to our Father, proud about how good they were by following the letter of the law instead of the Spirit of the Law. Our Father wants our love, He judges by where our heart is at. He judges by how much we love Him.

Our Father planted His own Son in this garden called earth as a lowly tree, He was presented to us not as a King but as a babe born among us. Then that babe was exalted to be our savor. He gave us His everything. He is that living Word that our Father spoke and that returned to our Father after He accomplished our Father's will for Him. He showed us how much He loves us, he showed us that He would die for us in our place because of our sin. He took the pain and gave us the healing. He endured shameful abuse so that we might know righteousness.

Let us think a moment about the real tree, that was planted grew up tall and strong, then one day was cut down and became the cross our savior was crucified on. At first thought what a low appointment for a tree, to become the cross used to crucify our Savior, but then how that cross has become exalted as the symbol for our precious savior's resurrection! We might not understand the things that happen to us in this world, but we can always have faith that no matter how bad things may seem to be our Father has everything under control and with His love He lifts us up to places that we could of never dreamed of.

have dried up the green tree

Jer 11:16 The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, fair, and of goodly fruit: with the noise of a great tumult he hath kindled fire upon it, and the branches of it are broken.
Jer 11:17 For the LORD of hosts, that planted thee, hath pronounced evil against thee, for the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have done against themselves to provoke me to anger in offering incense unto Baal.
Jer 11:18 And the LORD hath given me knowledge of it, and I know it: then thou shewedst me their doings.
Jer 11:19 But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.

God will never leave us or forsake us. Only we can leave Him and His love for us. Our Father has a plan for us, if we stray off course he will correct us. That is how He shows us He loves us. If He didn't love us He wouldn't even bother trying to correct us. He also sends us His truth as a way out of our troubles. Sometimes the green tree is dried up for correction.

Satan thought that He could murder the Truth and collect His inheritance by cutting Him off from the land of the living. Satan's own lies blinded himself to who was really in control. Satan's pride made him think he was in control. He was taken in his own snare. Satan and his children thought they would destroy the name of Jesus by crucifying His flesh. That cutting down of that Green tree brought forth more fruit. He was dried up in our place so that we might be full of sap and live.

and have made the dry tree to flourish

Jer 17:7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
Jer 17:8 For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

Our Father gives us power over Satan and his lies. All we have to do is put our trust and faith in God and His love for us, and we shall live and flourish and yield fruit all to the Glory of our Father.

Psa 92:13 Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.

Pro 11:28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

We can't depend on worldly riches they can guarantee us nothing. Only our Father can guarantee us life and love and provide for all our needs so that we can grow and produce more fruit.

Eze 20:45 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Eze 20:46 Son of man, set thy face toward the south, and drop thy word toward the south, and prophesy against the forest of the south field;
Eze 20:47 And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned therein.
Eze 20:48 And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.
Eze 20:49 Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! they say of me, Doth he not speak parables?

Our Father sends warnings to us, do you see the warnings as parables or do you have eyes to see and ears to hear the truth behind the parables?

Eze 37:3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Eze 37:4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.
Eze 37:5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:

Our Father breaths new life into the driest of trees or bones. We just need to open our eyes and ears to hear His still small voice and let His fire bring warmth and comfort and His love into our lives. We still have all the prophets our Father has sent to us over the years of many generations. It's up to us to listen to what they have said so that we can hear our Father's truth instead of hearing or seeing just a parable.

Jdg 9:8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
Jdg 9:9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honor God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
Jdg 9:10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
Jdg 9:11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
Jdg 9:12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
Jdg 9:13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
Jdg 9:14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
Jdg 9:15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

1Sa 8:7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
1Sa 8:8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
1Sa 8:9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

The bramble doesn't cast much of a shadow, to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear what our Father is trying to teach us, but the bramble does create a hot fire that he uses to try to devour God's cedars. Don't trust in the shadow of the bramble, Satan. His shadow will not protect you from our Father's fire, but the shadow of our Father can protect you against the fire that comes forth from the bramble. Our Father has sent us His living love letter that endures forever over many generations. He has given us examples, He has given us proof that what He says will be done. He has also told us the future of what is to come. He has done a lot of orchestration in order to show us His Love. It is up to us to read it with understanding and to rightly divide the truths that are contained in it. He gives us the tools, the materials, and the blue print to build our house upon The Rock. A house built on sand will be washed away with the flood of Satan's lies. Have faith to stand on our Rock's solid foundation build your house with the guidance of the still small voice of our Father. Open your eyes and ears to God's truth don't close your eyes and ears and say, it's just a parable and has nothing to do with us.
